In
1984 I accompanied a friend to the Hauck Memorial as a favor. I had
spent much time at dog shows in recent years and while I was interested in cynology in general. I was not keen on bull terriers
in particular. I therefore had no expectations when I came to
Prottes and was surrounded by dogs I did not care for. It only took
me a short while to completely change my preconceived notions about
bull terriers. At least as far as their personality was concerned, I
immediately took to this strange breed of dog.
In 1985 I joined the Austrian
Bull Terrier Club (ÖBTC), already knowing that my next dog would be
a 'Bulli'. I spent the next four years waiting, but made use of this
time to inform myself about breeders in Austria as well as abroad.
Finally, in 1989, the day came for me to welcome my first bull
terrier: 'QUANDA v. XANADU'. She always was and is to this
day a unique dog, a personality.
Whether
at the dog training center, at filming locations or shows, she has
always enjoyed being the center of attention. As a breeding dog, she
is the founding dam of many of the successful dogs in my kennel.
There have especially been many highly decorated dams descending
from her lines. The best Austrian bitches between 1994 and 1997 all
sport the 'LAUREOLA'S' name. Most successful bull terrier
bitch so far:
'LAUREOLA'S
BEQUEENA'
Austrian and International Champion, World Dog Show Bern, open classe: V2,
World Dog Show Brussels, open class: V1, CAC, Belgian Winner,
KETS 95 runner up bitches white. Best bull terrier bitch
1994-1995.
My bull
terrier's life?
My
bull terriers live in a pack with my Malinois and Chinese Crested.
This works out very well for the main part, since I am accepted as
the pack leader. Since I prefer not to kennel my dogs, I have to
keep their number relatively small. Still with five to seven dogs I
have to fight for my spot on the sofa when I want to watch TV. My 'Bullis' use any chance they can get to cuddle and get close. Some of them
come to work with me in Vienna, where they get to show off their
social behaviour at various dog runs during my breaks.
At home, the puppies are
generally raised by everyone and there have been a few orphans which
my bull terrier bitches have adopted lovingly. Even other pets are
integrated into the family without problems.
